Week-long 'heatwave' on the way

This weekend has been very typical for spring. We’ve had westerlies, heavy showers, fine spells and cold southerlies. Last Friday was the only really warm day at a staggering 29.5degC in Mosgiel.

By Tuesday or Wednesday, it was like winter with highs hovering around ten.

Our average has been around 15degC with lows of about 5degC.

There is usually no frosts after September, snow above 500m usually happens until October and snow has sometimes hit the likes of Mosgiel on Guy Fawkes.

This year’s trends point to a warmer than usual summer after a colder and wetter than usual winter (possibly the first effects of global warming)

Wednesday was rather rainy but in reality, only 10mm fell. Nobody forecasted this, instead opting to forecast showers morning and evening. It was great though, because do you know how fun touch rugby is in the rain?

I was amazed by TVNZ who reported 16 degrees in the city on Friday, compared to 29.5degC in Mosgiel, here’s what I said to them

“Hi, just wanted to say that your temperature reading of 16degC was very inaccurate. Here in Mosgiel (a satellite of the city) we hit 29.5degC and sat at 28degC for most of the day. A temperature difference of 13 degrees is almost impossible.”

Forecast:
The next week of weather starts out with the same stuff as the last week, a couple showers and mild temperatures, peaking at about 17 or 15. Then, what the media would call a heatwave hits...
Sunday: 24degC
Monday: 24degC (again)
Halloween: 25degC (hope the ghosts don’t cook)
Wednesday: 23degC (bit of a decline)

I won’t do anymore because that’s too far out, do, however, expect rain later next week, maybe pay attention to my weather page Dunedin Weather, But By a T̶w̶e̶l̶v̶e̶ Thirteen year old (“IF HE EVER POSTS THAT IS”).

Have fun guys, I sure won’t as I have swimming sports next week. Enjoy Halloween and make sure your candy doesn’t melt in the “heatwave.”

The temperature of 16degrees on that day for Dunedin city (Musselburgh Pumping Station) was correct. This temperature discrepancy sometimes occurs when inland spots such as Mosgiel and the Taieri plain experience the 'gradient wind' (in this case, warm northwesterly), but places such as parts of Dunedin (especially St. Kilda/St. Clair) are under the influence of a northeasterly which flows up the harbour (underneath the gradient wind above). Differences such as happened on that day occur from time to time in such situations.
