Christmas may still be a week away, but Santa's footsteps have already been heard on at least one Dunedin roof.

The trouble is, it might be hard to hear his sleigh arriving amid all the banging hammers, firing nailguns and buzzing power tools coming from up there, too.

The commotion is coming from a group of four roofers working for Cameron Roofing Specialists Ltd, who decided to whip up some Christmas spirit in the neighbourhood by dressing as Santas while they worked on the roof of a Helensburgh house yesterday.

Brothers Daniel (26) and Leon Cameron (38) and Luke (26) and Denny Knight (25) spent yesterday working away in festive attire, all the while listening to a CD of Christmas carols on repeat.

The idea was born after the group perceived a lack of Christmas cheer around Dunedin and decided to do something about it, Daniel Cameron said.

"No-one seems to have the Christmas spirit any more, so we decided we'd start," he explained.

"We are trying not to lose it as we get older."

And their efforts seemed to strike a chord, with impressed neighbours taking photos and several phone calls to the Otago Daily Times yesterday morning.

The Dunedin roofers said they planned to continue their dress-up antics each day until knocking off for the year on Tuesday.
