An argument between two people at the homeless encampment at Kensington Oval this morning escalated when a woman allegedly threatened to stab a police officer.

The 29-year-old woman was arguing with a man when police were called at 2.33am, Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said.

The woman, who police say was intoxicated, was "belligerent and aggressive" towards officers.

She was arrested for breaching her prison release conditions by drinking alcohol, and while in handcuffs, told officers she had a knife on her.

The woman then threatened to stab police, Sgt Lee said.

She was held in custody and would appear in Dunedin District Court this morning.

On Sunday at 10.40pm, a 33-year-old man crashed into the side of the Main South Rd offramp heading onto the motorway, and overturned the car, Sgt Lee said.

He then fled the scene.

He was quickly located by police, however, he refused to provide his details and resisted officers, Sgt Lee said.

The man was arrested and taken back to the police station where he underwent breath testing procedures.

He recorded a breath alcohol level of 808mcg - over triple the legal limit of 250mcg.

The man was released on bail, and was charged with careless driving and breath alcohol level over 400mcgs.

He would appear in Dunedin District Court at a later date.
