Woman escapes Dunedin fire with pet rabbit

A woman who escaped a Dunedin house fire clutching her pet rabbit was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Three Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) appliances were called to the scene about 8.45am in Stafford St.

A Fenz spokesman said the crews were using breathing apparatuses to fight the blaze.

There were reports of injuries but no details at this stage, he said.

A neighbour at the scene said the fire appeared to have started on the second floor of the central Dunedin flat.

A resident of the flat managed to get out and was holding a rabbit while she was being treated by Fenz officers at the scene.

She was later treated in a St John ambulance.

The fire appeared to be contained, however smoke could still be smelled in the air.

Stafford St is blocked off at both ends while crews were at the scene.
