Woman freed after car goes down Port Chalmers bank

An elderly woman crashed her car down a bank in Port Chalmers today and had to be freed from the vehicle by firefighters.

The crash happened in Bernicia St near Wickliffe Tce just after noon.

A crowd of St Joseph's School pupils looked on as fire crews from Willowbank and Port Chalmers assisted the shaken woman from her vehicle.

Port Chalmers Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Stephen Hill said crews managed to free the woman without extrication equipment from the car, which was wedged between a bank and a fence on the footpath.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said the 77-year-old woman was treated by ambulance officers for minor injures but was not taken to hospital.
