Women to appear on drink-drive-in charges

A woman who was so drunk she drove through a hedge at a fast-food outlet early yesterday will take away a drink-driving charge, police say.

Dunedin police were called to two separate drink-driving incidents involving female drivers, who had just left the drive-in at McDonald's in Andersons Bay Rd, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said.

A 30-year-old woman, who was pulled over at 2am, recorded a breath alcohol reading of 620mcg.

The legal limit is 400mcg.

In the second incident, a 23-year-old woman was charged with drink-driving after she recorded a level of 955mcg.

The woman had driven her car through a hedge while navigating the drive-through, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

The pair are expected to appear in the Dunedin District Court next week.

A McDonald's spokesman said there was no formal policy for staff in dealing with drunk driving, but was up to their discretion.

"If they felt strongly enough that the person might have been drinking, they can elect to call the police."

He said it was rare to have any drink-driving incidents at a drive-in and to have two at the same outlet in one night was a "weird coincidence".
