James Ung, of Dunedin, listens to Tom Hutchinson, principal cornet player for Welsh brass band the Cory Band at the Kaikorai Metropolitan Brass rooms yesterday.

Mr Hutchinson was in the city to give free cornet lessons as part of a Besson Instruments promotion.

Michael Chamberlain, who plays with the Kaikorai Metropolitan Brass, said he was very excited to hear Mr Hutchinson play and hear any tips he was willing to pass on.

He said the Cory Band was ''widely known'' as the best brass band in the world and had won the European brass band championships for the last three years.

As well as playing with the Cory Band, Mr Hutchinson is a professor of cornet at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and a cornet tutor for the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.
