Malcam Charitable Trust project co-ordinator Michela Carrington said Project Changemaker has channelled the abundant energy, youthfulness and fresh vision of 37 Queen's High School, Bayfield High School and Otago Girls' High School pupils, into creating and contributing to projects that make a difference in their community.
''Project Changemaker provides an educational and leadership opportunity that empowers students to address 21st century issues that they are concerned about.''
She said the programme began this year, and initiatives developed by the pupils included creating a short video about domestic violence and where to go to get help; selling chocolates to raise more than $300 for the Dunedin Paediatric Ward renovations; posting resources from Rape Crisis around school to lift awareness and organising a nail polish mufti day to raise funds for Rape Crisis Dunedin; creating a volunteer army to help those in need in the community; and establishing a Facebook page with information from the SPCA to raise awareness of animal abuse.
Miss Carrington said the participating pupils would gather tonight at Hub 174, on Princes St, to show off the initiatives they have been working on, and would be given awards for their contributions and achievements.
''The presentation evening is an opportunity for all of the students who participated, to come together with their family ... and celebrate their achievements and contributions.''
