Taieri College band Tai-rific's lead singer, Mitch Duke (13, left), performs an original song, Strong, alongside one of the band's guitarists, Riana Haua (13), at BandQuest at the King's and Queen's Performing Arts Centre last night.

''It was pretty fun,'' he said.

The band was one of 13 from around Otago, including four from Taieri College and one from Arrowtown Primary, to perform in the competition, which is a younger sibling to the Smokefreerockquest.

BandQuest caters for children of intermediate age and is a national competition.

Organiser Glenn Common said it gave the opportunity for young musicians to perform with stage lighting and a professional sound mix as well as benchmark themselves against their peers.

Last night's regional final was the last of 11 and the winner, Freckled Mangoes, from Arrowtown Primary School, will go through to the online national final.

The band has two weeks to record two songs for the final on December 2. Stewart Island's Halfmoon Bay School won the regional online final.
