A person was bitten by a police dog after a group of youths tried to flee a crash scene in Dunedin on Saturday.

Police responded to reports of a crash on the corner of Corrie St and Queens Dr early on Saturday morning, a police spokesman said.

The incident, which occurred shortly before 5am, involved a group of four youths.

They quickly fled the scene on foot following the crash.

A police dog tracked their location and bit one of them, the spokesman said.

A Hato Hone St John spokeswoman said one ambulance responded to the scene at 4.58am.

The youth who was bitten was transported to Dunedin Hospital in a moderate condition and had since received treatment.

The youths were all taken into custody.
