The annual sports exchange with Central Southland College has been completed for another year.
This year, the school had seven teams competing in the exchange - boys and girls senior A basketball, squash, mixed hockey, senior A and B netball and first XV rugby. The event was very competitive, with the deciding result coming in the final match of the day. Dunstan took the interschool trophy by four wins to three.
The trap shooting team has had a very successful season so far. It recently competed in an intercollegiate shoot in Dunedin where it finished second overall. Dylan Crawford did particularly well, gaining a first place in the skeet event.
The year 9, 10 and senior A netball teams played in the Otago secondary schools netball tournament, where they finished seventh, sixth and eighth respectively.
Taieri College
Netball teams had a very successful campaign at the Otago Secondary Schools Netball Championships. The 9A team was the eventual winner of the junior grade after a hard-fought final. The year 10 team finished fourth in the intermediate grade after losing the semifinal by two goals. After a few injuries to key players, the Senior A team finished sixth.
Congratulations go to Maia Wylie, Sequoia Leatham, Kaylee Bezett, Zara Forgie, Hannah Ashton and Jordyn Patterson, who all made Dunedin Netball Centre rep teams.
The junior and intermediate teams are heading to the South Island Junior Development Tournament in Christchurch this week.
Taieri recently hosted South Otago High School for the annual winter sports interchange. Sports played were rugby, netball, basketball, hockey, football and badminton. The exchange was played in good spirit with some great competition and the honours split between the schools.
Logan Park High School
The finals for Dunedin Secondary Schools boys' badminton were held last week. In division 1, Logan Park played Kavanagh, winning 6-0. Logan Park has been unbeaten all term and is now the top boys' badminton team in Dunedin.
The school is continuing to do well in bowls. Jonty Horwell competed in the Otago Indoor Bowls Championship recently and is now the Junior Singles U18 Otago champion. Jonty will travel to Wellington with Sean Hall to compete in the National Secondary Schools Indoor Bowls Champs in August. Jonty has also made the South Island U25 team for outdoor bowls.
It is midway through the season for boys' and girls' football. The junior boys' team has been winning its games convincingly and, on current form, will be in the finals next term. Joseph Araya has been selected for the Otago U14 team. The girls' team has also been playing well and is in second place. Logan Park High School is preparing for Winter Sports Tournament next term. The hockey First XI boys' team is looking good for the Coaches Cup Tournament in Blenheim with a win against John McGlashan's Second XI in the last game of Term 2.
In basketball, the boys' and girls' senior A teams will attend the Basketball NZ Zone Four Premiership Tournaments in Dunedin.
Both teams are performing well in the local competition. Frances Barnett was selected for the Spirit of NZ voyage and sailed out from Auckland and around the Bay of Islands for 10 days recently.
Otago Girls' High School
The OGHS Senior A netball team has had a great start to the season. After a year of building and development last year the team is now going from strength to strength. It has recently moved up a grade in the Saturday Dunedin Netball senior competition and also gained a well-deserved fourth placing in the Otago Secondary Schools' Netball Tournament in June. The school is very proud of representative netball players Kiana Pelasio (U17A), Tayla MacDonald (U17B), Holly Paterson and Brooke Miller (U15B), Becky Paterson and Maddie Campbell (U14A). Alice Moran and Erin Ford competed in the South Island Secondary Schools' Championships last weekend at Moana Pool. Also representing Otago Girls' was Grace Moreton in Year 9, who competed in the SWID events.
At the end of June, the Canterbury Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships were held in Lincoln. In Level 7, Ava McFadgen was second in hoop, third in ribbon and third overall. In Level 6, Caitlin Thomson was 10th in rope, eighth in clubs, fifth in ribbon and eighth overall while Christie Watson was 17th in rope, 12th in clubs, 10th in ribbon and 15th overall. Caitlin and Christie also competed in a group routine and won a gold medal. All three girls have qualified as individuals to compete at the National Championships in Auckland in October.
John McGlashan College
The school had some great success at the recent Otago Cross-Country Championships. Wilson Mitchell, second overall, Nic Taylor and Hamish Cotter won the senior teams event. The Under-16 team of Lochie Chittock, Cam McDowell and Oli Chignell also won. Oli Chignell was first in this race, leading the field from start to finish. Josh Stoddard finished first and Ben Mitchell third in the Under-14 race. Ben also had a creditable 16th in the NZ Cross-Country. Term 2 has been punctuated by three inter-schools.
The seniors enjoyed being billeted at St Andrew's, winning the rugby and football. The year 7 and 8s were billeted at Waihi, achieving a rare football victory. The school then hosted Balmacewen.
The hockey team enjoyed a good win and the rest of the boys enjoyed the experience of competing against strong opponents. Daniel Gruppelaar and Hamish Cotter have been selected into the Football Otago Youth Development Academy Squad and will travel to Northern Ireland to compete in the Under-17 Milk Cup competition. Louis Jennings finished second and third in the men's epee and men's foil respectively at the Under-15 National Fencing Championships.
Drew Schievink has recently had some great success in diving, gaining three golds at the 2014 Autumn Championships, and he also qualified for the Australian Elite Junior Championships.
Other successes include Charlie Cox finishing third in the secondary schools surfing competition, Nathan Harrison gaining second in the year 7 and 8 South Island schools orienteering championships and Raunaq Bhabra placing third in the South Island Under-15 Badminton Championships.
St Hilda's Collegiate
The First XV rugby team has had a great start to the season, remaining unbeaten in the local secondary schools competition.
Two weeks ago, the team travelled to Balclutha to play against the SOHS First XV. This game was to qualify for an opportunity to play Southland Girls' in the Highlanders pool of the Top 4 competition.
The team played extremely well in tiring conditions, with the wet ground not making it easy to get good ball out to the backs. It lost the match 22-7 but the team never gave up.
Caitlyn George has returned home after a very successful week representing New Zealand at the Oceania Games in Rarotonga. Caitlyn won one gold medal in the 4x100m relay and three silver medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x400m relay.
King's High School
Kings' High School has just completed two interschool fixtures in recent weeks against Shirley Boys and Southland Boys'. Some outstanding performances from the First XV and first basketball teams saw King's dominate the Shirley Boy's interschool, while good wins in the First XI hockey, First XI football, smallbore, trapshooting, first basketball, and first badminton, proved too much for Southland Boys', with King's coming out comfortable winners. Congratulations to the elite hockey players, Caleb Booth, Malachi Buschl, and Jordan Ward for making the Southern Region U18 hockey team which will travel to Napier during the July holidays to compete in the National U18 Tournament. The following rugby players have also been selected to attend the Highlanders Training Camp during the first week of the holidays; U18s Joe Cairns-Thomson, Sidney Fidow, U17s Taylor Haugh. The cross-country team has recently returned from nationals which were held in Palmerston North. There were some fantastic performances from Josh Rosie and David White, who each won gold medals in their AWD events. Malachi Buschl also ran his heart out, placing 9th in the junior race. He then teamed up with Zac Mason and Daniel Dickie to finish a creditable 10th in the three-person teams event.
The two All-Rounders Scholarships were awarded to Jordan Frost and Sam Ryan. Sporting Scholarships were awarded to Ethan Booth (The Brendon McCullum Summer Scholarship), Max Aitcheson (The Ben Smith Winter Scholarship), Lemanu Ma'asi (The Carl Hayman Winter Scholarship), Finn Ward (The Kukri Sports Scholarship), Nicholas Brosnahan and Joseph Carvell (The Sports Council Sports Scholarship).
Maniototo Area School
Dominick Geoffrey played in a squash tournament on June 21. He played extremely well and was placed top of the E grade.
In netball, Courtney Smith has been selected for the Central Otago Under 15 netball team.
Ashleigh Smith was awarded a Promising Umpire Award at Otago Secondary Schools Tournament.
Reuben Pyle made the Central Otago Under 16 rugby team and Thomas Howell and Keagan Mulholland were both selected for the Topp Cup game, Central Otago Under 14 team and the Otago Country Under 14 team.
In the sport of curling, Hunter Walker, Ben Smith, Matthew Neilson and Simon Neilson won the McLarens tournament last weekend. These four boys, plus Courtney Smith, Josh and Tash Whyte will be playing in the NZ nationals and NZ U21 tournaments during the holidays.
Four pupils are travelling to Nelson next week to take part in the NZ Area Schools Tournament. Reuben Pyle for rugby and volleyball, Liam Harrington for rugby, Laura Dowling for netball and volleyball and Colleen Hollows for netball, basketball and volleyball.
Roxburgh Area School
After a massive effort fundraising, Tahlia Moir, Amelia Pasco, Briana Forbes, Ashlyn Reid, Scott Muir, Anton Fitzgerald, Jack Lennon, Jonty McKinnel, Lauren kitto, Zac Botting and Mara Mc Curdy will attend the New Zealand Area School Tournament as part of the South of the South Team during the first week of the July holidays.
Ashyln Reid (U17), Mara McCurdy (U15), Lauren Kitto (U15) and Brooke Johnston (U14) have all been playing representative netball for Central Otago and Jordan Dance has been representing Otago Country (U14) in rugby and Anton Fitzgerald has been selected for the Football Federation Training Squad.
Kaikorai Valley College
Sport in Education staff leader Craig Reddington has won a study award to travel to Australia and further his knowledge about incorporating SIE more effectively in the class room to improve pupil engagement and learning using a sporting context.
As part of the school SIE programme, Year 9 pupils took part in a Mini Commonwealth Games. Events included mathletics, Englishathon, curling, slalom and biathlon. These events were designed to develop competencies in participating, relating to others, teamwork, fairplay, respect, striving for success, competition and joy of effort. All of the pupils demonstrated these during the event. The Senior A Netball team won its promotion/relegation game and has been promoted to the Prem 1 Secondary Schools Division.
The boys' football First XI has won all of its games convincingly and is currently top of the Secondary Schools Reserve Grade.
Hanna Ingram (Year 9) won gold and silver in the 13-15yrs section of the South Island Taekwondo Championships held in Invercargill in June. Hanna is currently a red belt with black tip and is working towards her Junior Black Belt.
Thomas Johnson has been invited to the Highlanders First XV Regional U18 camp which is being held in Dunedin in the first week of the school holidays.
