REBEKAH GREENE
St Hilda's Collegiate
Athletics

The best female middle-distance runner to emerge in Otago since Olympian Sylvia Potts 40 years ago. Holds every Otago record from age 14 to senior woman.

Won the New Zealand age 16 1500m and 3000m titles but her best performance came at the world junior championships in Canada when she qualified for the final with a time of 4min 18.90sec.

It ranked her as the fourth-fastest senior women in New Zealand this year.

COURTNEY DUNCAN
East Otago High School
Motocross

The Palmerston pocket rocket kept soaring in 2010.

She won the Australian junior women's motocross title, was third at the Oceania championships, finished second at the New Zealand junior championships and won the New Zealand TT title.

If that wasn't enough, Duncan also showed pace on foot by winning the women's title at the famous Kelly's Canter race.

But it's on two wheeels where the sky is the limit, and she is well on the path to elite success.

REGAN WILSON
King's High School
Ice hockey

Ice is nice for Wilson, who captained the Junior Ice Blacks to victory in group B of the world under-18 third division tournament in Mexico in March.

He was also named in an extended New Zealand senior squad and played for the Dunedin Thunder in the national league.

Wilson recently won the Salter Trophy for top King's sportsman.

SAMARA GALLAHER
Kavanagh College
Basketball

A talented and strong-rebounding guard, Gallaher helped the Otago Goldrush reach the final of the women's basketball championship in Dunedin this year.

She captained the New Zealand Under-18 team and was included in an extended Tall Ferns training squad.

LIAM EDWARDS
Otago Boys' High School
Rugby

Edwards was a key member of the Otago Boys' High School First XV this year and scored 209 points in the Highlanders competition with his accurate goal-kicking. He was also dangerous on the counterattack.

Edwards is also a hard-hitting cricket batsman and captain of the Otago Boys' First XI.

LAUREN WILSON
Queen's High School
Athletics

Won gold medals in the women's aged 19 100m and 200m at the New Zealand athletics championships in Auckland in March and backed it up with two more gold medals at the Oceania championships in Cairns in September.

She is ranked top in her age group in the 200m (24.96sec) and third in the 100m (12.53sec) in New Zealand.

KATE McDONALD
Dunstan High School
Mountain biking

No hill is too tough for this young gun. McDonald was selected in the New Zealand team for the Youth Olympics in Singapore, where she was fourth in the time trial and 10th overall girl.

She also won the New Zealand and national schools hill climb, and was second in the New Zealand cross-country.

JOHANNAH AND CAITLIN KEARNEY
St Kevin's College
Rowing

The Oamaru twins won a set of medals at the Maadi Cup regatta at Lake Ruataniwha this year.

They won a gold medal in the girls under-16 eight, silver in the double sculls and a bronze medal in the coxed four to help St Kevin's become the dominant Otago school at the regatta.

BRAD EVANS
Taieri College
Cycling

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Alison Shanks and Greg Henderson, the country's junior pursuit champion shapes as one of the region's most promising cyclists.

Evans represented New Zealand at the junior world championships in Italy, where he came fourth in the team pursuit and ninth in the individual pursuit.

SAMARA DALZIEL
Columba College
Athletics

Another Youth Olympian. Dalziel went to Singapore and played a starring role as the New Zealand team won a bronze medal.

She was also a member of the Southern Storm national league team.
