Lauren (17), a year 13 pupil at Queen's High School, is a member of Brent Ward's sprint squad and trains with her mother.
Liz Wilson is a top Otago masters sprinter who has broken Otago records.
"Most people wouldn't like to train with their parents, but it has never bothered me," Lauren said.
"It's good fun. She's not my mum when we train, just a training mate.
"Mum has never beaten me in a race. I would be worried if she did, but I don't think she will."
Lauren's potential was first identified and fostered by former Australian coach Jim Baird when she joined his squad at the age of 12.
She trained with Baird for two years and then played for the Roslyn-Wakari football team for two years before returning to athletics.
Lauren came back to athletics in Baird's squad and switched to Ward's senior squad last year.
"Brent's a very good coach and it's good to be around other athletes who are at the same level as myself," Lauren said.
She now trains with former New Zealand champions like Chris Donaldson, Cory Innes and Andrew Moore, who are members of Ward's squad.
"I just love the sport," Lauren said. "It may sound weird but I find training with Brent's squad enjoyable."
It has been a vintage six months for Lauren.
She won bronze medals in the 100m and 200m at the New Zealand secondary school championships in December and gold medals in the women's 19 grade at the New Zealand club championships in Auckland last month.
An added bonus was to win the women's section of the Time Buster around the Octagon in February.
She joined her mother in the Athletics Otago record books when she ran an Otago women's aged 17 and 18 record 100m time of 12.13sec in Auckland. She has a best 200m time of 24.94sec.
In her spare time, Lauren enjoys smallbore rifle shooting for her school team.
Her long-term goal is to compete for New Zealand at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016.
