The body of a man has been found in Lake Tekapo, the second in less than a week.

Police this morning said emergency services were called about 8.40am yesterday after the body was seen in the shallows by the western shore.

On arrival, they found the man dead at the scene.

Sergeant Warwick Worth said the discovery did not relate to the "earlier tragedy" on June 12, when the body of another man was retrieved from the lake, after a two-day search.

Sgt Worth said inquiries were ongoing, but police were not treating the matter as suspicious.

The man was not believed to have any family in New Zealand. Police have made contact with the relevant consulate so that his next of kin can be notified overseas.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
