Three teams qualified for post section play in the Old Bank Cafe & Bar-sponsored Masters Fours Zone Qualifier tournament held at the weekend.

The team of Kevin Anngow, Alan Jenks, Michael Higgins and Janet Briggs got the bye and headed straight to the final so David Mealings, Lyn Brown, Mary Mealings and Kelvin Lockyer had to play Barry Black, Diane Warwood, Syd Austin and Kay Austin to be the other finalist.

Mealings won this 9-4 and their momentum carried on into the final when they were 6-0 up after four ends.

However, Anngow’s team managed to score a point in the next few ends and on two occasions were holding four shots until David Mealings, as skip, played some cracking last bowls to deny the opposition vital points.

Team Mealings went on to win the Alan Reid Trophy 8-5 and will play in the Eastern Zone Finals Weekend next month.

Along with Kelvin Lockyer and Barry Black, David Mealings attended the Chartered Clubs Men’s Tournament in Whanganui earlier in the week.
