The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce is expanding leadership development opportunities across the region with the launch of a brand-new South Canterbury Young Leadership Series, while continuing to deliver its highly-regarded Leadership Speaker Series for more established and experienced managers and business owners.

The new Young Leadership Series is a practical series of four two-hour workshops, designed specifically for young people in the early stages of work, study, training, apprenticeships or learning on the job.

The programme aims to support young people who are beginning to take on responsibility, demonstrate leadership potential or are thinking seriously about their future career pathways.

We know South Canterbury has incredible young talent, and businesses have advised that they are looking to support these young people to step up. These workshops are about helping young people recognise their strengths, build confidence and understand leadership isn’t something you wait for — it’s something you can start developing right now.

Participants will explore leadership through a combination of workshops, a business visit, and interactive learning experiences, gaining valuable insights from respected local leaders and organisations.

The series begins with The World of Work, facilitated by leadership specialist Tenika Reihana, who will also facilitate the remaining workshops throughout the programme. Participants will gain practical insights into workplace expectations, professional communication and building confidence in professional environments.

Additional sessions include Modern Leadership with Anna Bolland, exploring how leadership can be demonstrated from any role through strong values, decision-making, accountability and influence. Entrepreneurship in Action with Charlotte Bowen at a special Heartland Chips site visit, providing participants with a behind-the-scenes look at a successful South Canterbury business and encouraging a founder’s mindset.

The series concludes with Governance and Community Leadership with Mark Rogers, introducing participants to governance principles and the role leadership plays in shaping organisations and communities.

The Chamber is seeking young people who demonstrate a desire to grow, a spark that sets them apart, openness to new opportunities and a willingness to collaborate and learn alongside others. Businesses are strongly encouraged to support their younger team members and book them in, young people who may not previously have had access to leadership development opportunities.

Alongside the Young Leadership Series, the Chamber’s established Leadership Speaker Series continues to provide professional development opportunities for leaders looking to strengthen their capability, expand their networks, and make a greater impact within their organisations and communities. With presenters who bring mana, practical experience and wisdom including Michelle Pye, Justin Riley, Richie Smith, Daniel Webber, James Meager and Dr Therese Arseneau and facilitated by Beth Park.

With the South Canterbury Young Leadership Series getting under way on August 25 and the Leadership Speaker Series starting on September 11, businesses are encouraged to book in now as places are limited.
