But the 16-year-old Taieri College gymnast is saving his strength for the nationals in Hamilton later this month.
The talented athlete took up the sport seven years ago and has flourished.
Earlier this month, the year-11 pupil placed second overall in his category at the South Island championships in Timaru.
He also won two individual apparatus titles in the vault and parallel bars, and placed second in the rings and third in the pommel and high bar.
Those results demanded his selection in a 33-strong Otago team, and it is the sort of form he hopes will stand him in good stead at the nationals.
"I was expecting some good results [at the South Island Championships] but not on the overall podium.
So that was pretty pleasing," Hamish said.
"I can't wait to go to the nationals. It will be interesting to see how I go. This is my first year competing at level six at the nationals, so I'm not really too sure."
Hamish will be competing in his third national tournament and has won some individual apparatus titles in his category.
He won the vault two years ago and placed second on the parallel bars in 2007.
Forward rolls and tumbling are not for Hamish. He prefers the strength events and his favourite apparatus are the vault and parallel bars.
"I like competing on the vault and flying through the air, I suppose" he said with a laugh.
Most of his training is done on specific apparatus but he also does some resistance training to build the required strength to compete.
He can hold a handstand for 10 minutes but has not tried walking around the block.
"It is not ideal to move on your hands because it teaches you bad habits, but I probably could."
Hamish's goal is to finish in the top three in the overall competition at the nationals.
