The Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) made a swoop on a visitor centre in Rotorua last night.
Area commander Inspector Bruce Horne said a man was arrested by members of the AOS near the centre after getting off a bus.
He had been one of a few occupants on the bus and the only person near the visitor centre when surrounded by armed police, Mr Horne said.
An Auckland man, 33, will appear in the Rotorua District Court today, charged with possession of an air pistol and possession of instruments for using methamphetamine.
