Gas from a barbecue is believed to have caused the deaths of two men whose bodies were found in a Waikato motor camp today.
A third male staying in the same cabin was taken to hospital in a distressed state.
The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance said it was called out to Ruapuke Motor Camp, south of Raglan, to treat a 32-year-old Hamilton man.
The victim had suffered carbon monoxide poisoning during the night, with the gas coming from a burning barbecue in the hut.
The bodies of the two men who died were found by other campers about 8am.
Police said initial indications were that there were no suspicious circumstances.
Waikato District Health Board spokeswoman Mary Ann Gill said the man taken to Waikato Hospital was in a serious condition and was likely to undergo surgery.
She said he could be moved to Devonport naval base in Auckland, where there was a hyperbaric chamber.
The chamber is normally used for treating divers suffering from decompression sickness, or the bends.
