Doctor faces trial on historic sex charges

An Auckland doctor who allegedly raped a young girl will go to trial on historic sex charges.

The doctor conceded a case existed against him when he appeared at a brief depositions hearing in Auckland District Court today on five charges of rape, attempted rape and indecent assault.

The man's alleged victims were aged eight or under and the alleged offences occurred between 1979 and 1989 in a small community on the Coromandel Peninsula.

The 58-year-old doctor has name suppression and was due to appear again at a callover at the High Court in Auckland late next month.

In court today the charges were read and the accused man responded not guilty in a loud and clear voice.
