A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was seriously assaulted in South Auckland in the early hours of this morning.
Police are investigating the incident, which happened outside Denny's restaurant in Manukau about 3.20.
Police say the 36-year-old victim was with a friend when they were approached by a group of about five men.
"A fight has taken place and the victim has sustained a serious head injury."
The other group fled on foot, while the victim was taken to Auckland Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
Police have cordoned off Denny's carpark in Lakewood Court and it will remain closed for the day.
