Fisherman missing after boat flips

A major search has been launched for a fisherman who disappeared after his inflatable dinghy flipped north of Auckland today.

Police, Coastguard, Westpac Rescue and other maritime resources were involved in searching for the man who went missing in the Ti Point and Omaha estuary area, north east of Warkworth, police said.

It was understood the fisherman was in a small inflatable dinghy that overturned in a gust of wind tipping the two occupants into the water about 11am.

The missing fisherman, who was not wearing a life jacket, has not been found since this incident despite an extensive shore line and water search, police said.

The other occupant managed to make his way to safety and called police.
