More than 30 firefighters are battling a house fire in Lower Hutt this evening.
They were alerted to the blaze, on Lower Hutt's Normandale Rd, around 4.15pm, Central fire communications shift manager Murray Dunbar said.
The fire had attracted a "third alarm" response and was well involved when crews arrived, he said.
"We're just bringing it under control now."
Third alarm denoted the fire service's third escalation level out of a possible five - meaning attending crews had called for backup three times since arriving, Mr Dunbar said.
Seven fire engines and more than 30 fire fighters were now battling the blaze.
No one was in the house at the time and it had yet to threaten neighbouring properties, he said.
