The public is being asked to avoid the Waihau Bay area after the blaze, which started about 3am today.
Fire and Emergency NZ said people are unaccounted for.
"When we arrived, the house was well involved in fire", Northern shift manager Garreth Lewis said.
Four crews were sent to the home in Wi Tupaea Rd that had been "significantly damaged".
Police said they were notified about 4am.
"It is unclear whether the address was occupied at the time of the fire, and work is under way to locate known occupants of the address."
