Emergency services were called to the collision involving a car at the intersection of Murdoch St and Colville Rd just after 1.15am today.
When they arrived the male pedestrian was already dead, police said in a statement.
Murdoch St has been closed between Colville Rd and Dargaville Rugby Park.
"We would like to thank the members of the public who stopped to help before emergency services arrived," the statement said.
Police want to hear from anyone not yet spoken to who may have witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage of the incident.
