Police divers are searching Lake Rotoma, northeast of Rotorua, after a small aluminium boat was found going in circles last night.
A helicopter and search team were called after 7pm but could not find the boat's owner.
The search was stopped after dark and resumed about 6am, Whakatane Police said.
