A 59-year-old man and his dog were killed in a collision near Marton in northern Manawatu this morning.
Police said the man, from the Rangitikei area, appeared to fail to stop his Toyota Rav 4 through a give way sign at a road junction and drove into the path of a Nissan Terrano.
He was freed from his vehicle by firefighters but died before a rescue helicopter could arrive from Palmerston North. His dog was also killed in the crash.
The driver of the Nissan, a man from Wanganui, was taken to Wanganui Hospital with minor injuries.
The serious crash investigation unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
