Motorcyclist hit by wrong-way car, loses leg

A 38-year-old motorcyclist has lost his leg after being hit head-on by a car travelling the wrong way on Auckland's southern motorway.

The man had been riding his motorcycle south when he was struck by the car, which did not stop, near Otahuhu just after 1am.

He was taken to Middlemore Hospital with head and serious leg injuries but his leg was removed during surgery, said police communications shift Inspector Norman Upjohn.

Police said they received several calls from motorists before and after the incident, reporting a vehicle travelling north at speed in the southbound lanes.

The man was hospitalised with head and serious leg injuries following the incident.

Police are speaking to a man whose car struck a tree on the Princess Street southbound on-ramp a short time later.

The motorcyclist was taken to Middlemore Hospital with serious leg injuries.

The Serious Crash Unit are investigating.

Meanwhile, a man died last night on the city's northwestern motorway.

An ambulance communications spokesman said the man's car collided with a van on the Te Atatu off ramp heading west about 6pm.

It is believed the man may have suffered a medical emergency before the crash, which caused heavy traffic delays.
