Murupara house fire linked to murder inquiry

Police are investigating links between a house fire in Murupara on Friday and an alleged gang-related killing in the town two weeks beforehand.

The house, which had been vacant for sometime, was destroyed in what police are treating as a suspicious incident. No one was hurt.

Five teenagers have been arrested and charged with the murder of Kaine Lewis, 17, who was beaten and dumped on a driveway of a Murupara house on October 3.

Acting area Rotorua commander Inspector Greg Sparrow said today the fire was at an "address of interest to us" through the murder inquiry.

Mr Lewis was the second teenager to die in a gang-related incident in Murupara in the Bay of Plenty town in nine months.

In January Jordan Herewini, 16, was run down by a vehicle allegedly driven by a gang member now facing a murder charge.
