Neighbour chases armed robber

A neighbour pursued an armed dairy robber in Hamilton yesterday but the good samaritan was unable able to catch the man who fled with "a small amount of cash".

Police said the alleged robber entered a Ellicott Rd dairy in Hamilton West about 11am, presented a silver or white pistol at the shop attendant and demanded cash.

Detective Daryl Smith, of Hamilton CIB, said the man escaped with a small amount of cash and was chased by a neighbour, who saw him running down the street.

The offender, described as Maori or Polynesian, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans cut off at the knees, was last seen turning down Aberfoyle St.

Police want to hear from any witnesses.

Mr Smith said there was nothing to link the incident to a series of robberies to hit small businesses in Hamilton since May.
