Neighbours have described hearing a "death wail'' coming from a house where a woman's body was found this morning.
North Shore police have launched a homicide investigation after finding the body at a house in Eban Ave, Hillcrest, about 7.15am following a 111 call.
A weapon had been found and police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the death, police said.
A man who was at the scene was assisting investigators.
Police have cordoned off the area and investigations are under way.
A post-mortem would be held into the woman's death.
A neighbour said moaning was heard just after 7am.
"Mum and Dad came outside to go to work and heard it - Dad called it a 'death wail'. It was a woman," he said.
Police were arriving at the same time, he said.
A house in the street owned by Tracey and Brian Marceau had been cordoned off.
The couple have two daughters, Heather and Christie, and Mrs Marceau's mother was believed to live downstairs, said neighbours.
