Nelson police hunt naked man

Police are hunting for a naked man who approached a school student, allegedly performed an indecent act, then ran away.

The suspect approached the student at the Railway Reserve in Stoke, Nelson but was also seen at other parks in the area.

The man police are hunting was described as Caucasian, with a "fat stomach" in his 30s or 40s who had "salt and pepper coloured hair" and a goatee beard. He was described as tall and was recently wearing knee-length shorts and a grey top.

Police believe he'd frequented Tahunanui touch fields and the Railway Reserve behind Broadgreen School as recently as yesterday.

The man who allegedly performed the lewd act was considered a risk to the community, Detective Sergeant Ian Langridge said.

Mr Langridge said police would have an increased presence in the area until the person was identified.

"Police ask residents with properties backing on to the Railway Reserve to keep an eye out for someone fitting this description. They believe someone in the Stoke area will be able to identify this man," Nelson Police said in a statement.

"Police also ask parents to reinforce the Keeping Yourself Safe messages to their children such as walking in groups, looking after your friends and not going with strangers."

Police said people with information that could help identify the man should phone Nelson Police on 03 546 3840. People could also provide Information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
