Oamaru teen killed in crash

Hopes for a third weekend in a row without a fatal crash - the first in New Zealand since records began - were dashed by two fatal crashes in Otago last night.

An 18-year-old Oamaru girl was killed in a crash on Parsons Rd early last night and a motorcyclist died in a head-on collision between two motorcycles on Earnscleugh Rd between Clyde and Alexandra at 9.55pm. .

St John spokesman Kevin Paul said the other motorcyclist was taken to hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

No further details were available last night.

The Oamaru girl was one of four young people in a car travelling towards Oamaru just before 6pm.

Near the intersection with Chelmer St, the driver lost control of the vehicle on a corner. The car hit a bank and overturned.

The other three occupants were taken to Oamaru Hospital for treatment of injuries they received in the crash.

Police were still investigating the accident last night and could provide no further information on the victims.

Until then, there had been no reports of fatal crashes on New Zealand's roads for what was set to be the third weekend in a row.

Aside from that, there had only been one other weekend (January 19-21) so far this year without a road death.

Police said the country was on track to record one of the lowest annual road tolls since records began.
