One death on the roads

A man killed in head-on crash south of Auckland was the only reported road fatality of the weekend.

The man, a passenger, died in a two-car collision on a bend near State Highway 22 in Drury.

Three other people were taken to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition after the incident on Saturday night.

One car was carrying three people, while the other had just the driver.

Police said they were investigating whether alcohol played a part in the crash.

However, residents also said there had been many accidents on the bend and appeals had been made over the years to have the road restructured.

There was another death involving a vehicle, but not listed as part of the official road statistics because it happened in a driveway.
