One killed in Nth Island crash

A person was killed and another seriously injured in a crash north of Wellington this afternoon.

A police spokesman said two cars collided on Takapu Rd in Grenada North, near Tawa, shortly after 3pm.

The driver of one car died at the scene and their passenger was seriously injured. The driver of the other vehicle was assisting police.

The police serious crash unit was investigating.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area if possible.

The crash comes as heavy rain causes causing flooding and congestion on the capital's roads.

Wellington City Council had received more than 150 calls about flooding this morning, and it advised motorists to use extreme caution and, if possible, avoid driving.

Police advised motorists to keep their speed down, put their lights on and check their following distances.
