Police have released the name of the man killed in a crash near Nelson on Sunday.
He was Richard Nicholas John MacKay, aged 39, from Foxhill, 34km southwest of Nelson.
Mr MacKay was a passenger in a Mercedes Benz which police said failed to give way at the intersection of the Moutere Highway and Golden Hills Road, west of Richmond, and collided with a truck and trailer.
The driver of the car is still in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit.
The truck driver thought he had seen another car at the intersection and police would like to speak to its driver, who they believe may have witnessed the impact, Detective Bruce McLachlan said.
