Patients may have to pay for ACC scans

Injured people may have to pay for part of their high-tech scans under a proposed cost-saving measure.

The ACC has been under pressure from the Government to cut costs because of its perilous financial position.

Minister Nick Smith said ACC was unsustainable in its current form.

Dr Smith previously announced the Government would cut free physiotherapy in a bid to save money.

Now, the option of injured people paying for part of their MRI and CT scans was being considered, The New Zealand Herald reported.

The fee for each scan is around $1000, totalling $60 million this financial year, a discussion document said.

ACC director of clinical services Kevin Morris said no final decision had been reached on the level of patient co-payments.
