Burglars who stole guns from a Whakatane property last night repeatedly rammed police cars and even threw a chainsaw at pursuing officers as they made their getaway.
Raiders fled a Poroporo property in an SUV about 10.30pm after stealing a firearms safe containing two guns and ammunition, along with chainsaws, fishing equipment and a lawnmower.
Police caught up with the burglars heading towards Taneatua before they stopped and reversed into the police vehicles and took off again.
In two subsequent rammings, a male officer suffered a minor injury.
The offenders were last seen heading south on Reid Road.
Police are appealing for sightings of the dark-coloured large, older style SUV similar to a Pajero, Bighorn or Prada, which will have extensive damage to its rear.
