Serious crash at Selwyn River Bridge

A person has been transported to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter following a crash in Selwyn.

The two-vehicle crash, which happened at about 1.30pm on Monday, has forced the closure of State Highway 1 at the Selwyn River Bridge, south of Burnham.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said one person suffered critical injuries and was taken to hospital by helicopter. Two others suffered moderate injuries and have also been taken to hospital.

Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman Andrew Norris said crews attended and had to cut the person out of their vehicle.

Diversions are currently in place.

Northbound traffic should turn left onto Selwyn Lakes Rd then left onto Leeston Rd then turn left onto Ellesmere Junction Rd back onto SH1.

Southbound traffic should turn right onto Telegraph Rd then left onto Bealey Rd onto Derretts then onto Dunsandel then onto Hororata Rd then back onto SH1.

The serious crash unit has been advised.
