A thief with a sweet tooth has been charged with stealing hundreds of bars of chocolate worth thousands of dollars.

The recidivist shoplifter is allegedly responsible for more than $9000 worth of stolen goods in one area of Auckland alone.

The 35-year-old man is now facing 21 charges and has been remanded in custody, Auckland city west area prevention manager Inspector Wayne Kitcher said.

Inspector Kitcher said 19 of the charges related to various shoplifting incidents across Auckland.

“It appears this person has allegedly targeted chocolate from various supermarkets across the city.”

In once instance the man allegedly stole more than $3000 worth of the sweet treat from a Te Atatū supermarket.

“Police is continuing to target prolific offending against retail businesses in our communities.”

The man is due before the courts again in August.
