Student dies in dive-training incident

A student has died while diving with a commercial diving school near Huntly.

The Intueri Education Group, which runs the New Zealand School of Commercial Diver Training, said an international male student died during an assessment dive at the school's lake-training facility in Lake Puketirini in Huntly yesterday afternoon.

Police and ambulance staff were called to the incident.

"This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the diver, his friends, our staff and other students," Intueri Education Group chief executive Rob Facer said.

"We will support them however we can."

A WorkSafe NZ spokesman confirmed it was investigating the incident.

"We were notified of that yesterday. We sent out an investigator."

No further details were available as the investigation was pending, he said.
