Suspicious blaze at site of historic Chch mansion

Firefighters spent the early hours of Friday morning battling a suspicious blaze in a derelict building behind Christchurch’s historic McLean’s Mansion.

It is the second suspicious fire to have broken out at the site of the 118-year-old heritage-listed mansion on Manchester St in the last six months.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said six crews were called to the scene at 1.20am to find the structure “well ablaze,” covering an area of about 15 by 3m.

Crews were at the job for almost four hours. No one was injured in the blaze.

The spokesman said the incident has been referred to police and a fire investigation team.

He could not confirm whether it was the same building as the one which broke out in a building behind the mansion in December.
