Three die in weekend crashes

Three people have died in three separate crashes on New Zealand's roads this weekend.

On Saturday night a 21-year-old Wellington woman died when the car she was driving lost control around a bend and rolled.

The single-car crash happened about 11.15pm on State Highway 41 in Tokaanu, 5 kilometres north west of Turangi, Senior Constable Dave Frazer said.

No one else was in the car.

Another woman died yesterday afternoon when a car and ute collided on Cambridge Road, about 8km east of Te Awamutu.

The car lost control on a moderate bend and crashed into an oncoming ute.

The woman driver of the car died at the scene, while the driver of the ute suffered minor injuries.

Early this morning one person died in a motorbike crash on State Highway 1 just north of Foxton, 20km north of Levin.

No one else was injured in the crash.

Compared with last year, the overall number of deaths on New Zealand's roads is down almost 25 percent, from 264 this time last year to 199 this year.

The last weekend to have no deadly crashes was eight weeks ago.
