Truck rolls on Auckland Harbour Bridge

A 29-year-old Auckland man escaped uninjured after the truck he was driving rolled on the Harbour Bridge this morning.

The small Arctic Ice truck rolled about 10.40am on the downward side of the northbound clip-on lanes.

Traffic was backed up to the Mt Wellington interchange as emergency services worked to clear bags of ice, petrol and oil from the roadway.

The driver freed himself from the vehicle but was taken to North Shore Hospital where he remained in a comfortable condition.

A spokesperson for the ice-delivery service said the driver was "fine''.

He did not wish to comment further.

NZTA spokesperson Ewart Barnsley said two lanes of the bridge were closed for about an hour, causing significant traffic delays.

"Lane 2 was closed until the vehicle was moved and a petrol and oil spill cleared,'' he said. "Lane 1 was closed for a short-time so that emergency vehicles could clear the vehicle and help the driver.

"The crash did cause congestion and there was queuing northbound for a time back to the Mt Wellington interchange.''

Auckland Police Acting Sergeant Marius Snetler said police were investigating if careless driving charges would be laid.
