Two injured in crash near Auckland

Two people have been taken to hospital after a head on collision in Kariotahi, south west of Auckland.

A 19-year-old female and a 51-year-old male were the sole occupants of two vehicles that collided on Awhitu Road around 8am.

Both drivers sustained injuries and were taken to Middlemore Hospital.

The female driver was flown to hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a serious but stable condition while the male driver was taken by ambulance in a stable condition.

Senior sergeant John Yearbury said it was unclear which driver had been at fault.

"We will have to determine fault at some point and see who crossed the line there somewhere," he said.

Police are investigating the incident.
