Two women killed in Whangarei shooting

Two women are dead and one man was injured after a shooting at a rural address on Mt Tiger Rd, Whareora, Whangarei. Two women had gone to a home to carry out a property inspection when they were shot and killed near Whangarei, police have revealed.

Police are addressing media after the women - who were possibly related - were shot at a rural Northland address.

The alleged shooter was known to police. Tear gas was used and shots were fired between the alleged offender and police.

They believe the man is still at the house but it is unclear if he is alive.

Police said the incident was not gang related.

Also, a man is in a stable condition in Whangarei Hospital with moderate injuries.

Police and AOS responded immediately after receiving reports of the incident and quickly cordoned off the area.

An Eagle helicopter has been deployed and the Police Negotiation Team are also on the scene.

Police are speaking to the occupants of neighbouring properties inside the cordon and are advising them to stay indoors.

Further information will be provided when it becomes available, police said.

It is understood multiple shots had been fired at a property on Mt Tiger Rd, near the intersection with Whareora Rd, about 10km from the city. Police were called to the property about 11am today.

After a cordon was set up, a man in a red Suzuki with a bullet hole through the windscreen drove towards it. He got out and was taken by police to the back of a waiting ambulance.

A man believed to be a family member later arrived at the cordon and police seated him in a car.

Workers at Rosvall Sawmill on Whareora Rd were ordered to go into lockdown at 11.30am and to stay inside while officers searched nearby paddocks.

Sawmill owner Mark Hansen said all 55 staff spent nearly two hours in the company's smoko room while waiting for the all-clear.

"Police said there had been a shooting up the road and suspected whoever was responsible was on the loose," he said.

Mr Hansen said it was frustrating to be in lockdown for nearly two hours. "We're losing many thousands of dollars an hour but that's okay. Our staff come first," he said.
