A severe weather warning has been issued for the lower South Island as a front is expected to bring heavy rains from tomorrow morning.
MetService said an active front would descend on Fiordland tomorrow before travelling along the Southern Alps towards Nelson.
About 130 millimetres of rain was expected for the Westland ranges during Sunday which, while not extraordinary for the Alps, prompted a warning to trampers to watch out for rapidly rising waterways.
The front was also likely to bring northerly gales in parts of Otago and Southland.
