Woman hit by two cars critical

A Whakatane woman is in hospital with critical injuries after being struck by two cars travelling in opposite directions.

Police and emergency services were called to Alexander Ave, Whakatane, just before 2.30pm yesterday after reports of a car crash.

Senior Sergeant Bruce Jenkins said when police got to the scene they were told by witnesses, the woman, believed to be in her 20s, ran straight on to the road and was hit by a small hatchback car.

She went up on to the bonnet of the car before landing on the road where she was struck by a sedan travelling in the opposite direction.

She was taken to Whakatane Hospital in a critical condition.
