National's Invercargill MP Eric Roy has comfortably retained the seat which he has held since 2005.

His election night majority was 5766, compared with a 2008 final majority of 6664.

Labour's Lesley Soper, who has had two brief stints previously as a list MP, attracted 10,3390 votes, more than a third of the votes cast, a proportion not vastly different from her 2008 result.

However, Labour's share of the party vote, which last time had been 36.7%, similar to Ms Soper's personal result that election, was 28.41% this time.

National's party vote at 15,089 was lower than its final tally of 16,663 last election but its proportion of the vote increased by more than 2% to 49.66%.

The number of voters was down by more than 2500 at 32,622, including special votes.

Despite the lower turnout, Green Party candidate David Kennedy picked up 2150 votes, increasing the Green share of the candidates' vote to more than 7%, compared to just under 5% at the previous election.

The Greens also picked up more party votes this time, raising the number by more than 900 to 2411.

In the party vote, New Zealand First doubled its share to 6.8% of the vote, attracting 904 more votes on the night than it received in the final results last election.
