Harawira to launch Mana party

Renegade independent MP Hone Harawira will launch his new party, Mana, in Auckland today.

Mr Harawira, who quit the Maori Party in February, will launch the party at Te Mahurehure Marae in the Auckland suburb of Point Chevalier.

The invite to the launch says the party will be an independent voice for Maori.

In a message to a unionist this week, Mr Harawira said Mana would be "anti-neoliberal, against monopoly capitalism, and against privatisation of the people's assets", the New Zealand Herald reported.

"The party and I will be pro-worker."

The strategy on taxes would be targeted at wealth such as capital gains taxes, death duties and asset taxes.

Council of Trade Unions Maori vice-president Syd Keepa would be speaking at the launch alongside Unite founder Matt McCarten, and former Green MPs Sue Bradford and Nandor Tanczos.

Mr Harawira was also expected to announce today whether he would force a by-election in his electorate by resigning to seek a new mandate.
